_Jeff Chenault]

Originally from Port Huron, Michigan, Jeff Chenault started experimenting with tape loops, found sounds, and industrial noise in 1983. Port Huron gave birth to Hunting Lodge and inspired a generation of other noise enthusiasts but that’s another story. Jeff’s early experiments were unannounced noise improvisations. In 1981 he graduated from a recording school in Detroit and moved to Columbus, Ohio to obtain an electronics degree at Devry Institute of Technology. The degree never materialized so Jeff started working full time and recording. By the mid-80's, he founded the International Terrorist Network or ITN, cassette label and would release over 75 tapes of original music. The name would later change to Exoteque Music because of postal issues. It was during these early days of the cassette culture that Jeff would release his own music as well as the music of others.

Trading tapes with people around the world became a way of life. Sharing and trading tapes of original music also inspired collaboration. Soon multiple collaborations with people from all over the world would happen. All pre-internet! The spirit of DIY and lo-fi electronics flow through Jeff’s recordings, and he has an insatiable appetite for sound manipulation, cut-ups, and the experimental use of noise. From an early age he became interested in sounds that alter states of consciousness. In the early 1990’s, Jeff recorded pieces for use with the Cotyledon, a sound bio-entertainment system and conscious-awareness training device. Music and sounds that call for a subconscience awakening. In 1990 he formed 10-Speed Guillotine with Andrew Izold and quickly became one of the premier cyberpunk bands in Ohio. Since meeting Andy, they have released a plethora of experimental electronic projects under various names that continue to this day. Jeff also wrote the liner notes for the Hunting Lodge box set “Shadows out of Time” that was released in 2010 on the Vinyl on Demand label in Germany.

Jeff’s current projects include Skull Vacuum with Chris Phinney as well as a project with Fluxus author John M. Bennett. Jeff is currently the President of the Fuse Factory Electronic and Digital Arts Lab, located in Columbus, Ohio. It is one of the leading experimental groups in the state bringing a wide variety of live performances each month with their Frequency Friday series.
Jeff is also a published author and has written multiple books on Tiki Culture. He is also an avid
record collector, preservationist, and musical historian and has produced three albums of rare
exotica music for Dionysus Records. His passion for exotica music and noise feeds his creativity
with endless possibilities.
