_Ebauche]

Ebauche is one of many monikers used by Alex Leonard, an Irish music producer based in Berlin. Following vocal and piano training in the 1990s, he began exploring electronic music in the early 2000s, and completed a two‑year program in Sound Engineering and Music Technology at Dublin’s Sound Training Centre. Throughout the 2000s he became embedded in Ireland’s underground electronic scene, releasing material through Invisible Agent Records and The Alphabet Set, and sharing stages with artists such as Biosphere, Keith Fullerton‑Whitman, Frog Pocket, and Lakker.
In 2005 his debut album Incomplete Watch Movement was featured on John Kelly’s The Mystery Train, one of Ireland’s most respected radio shows. During the 2000s he also composed and designed sound for a variety of live-action and animated short films, as well as art installations, dance performances, and theatre projects. In 2009 he composed his first full-length feature score for Five Day Shelter. From 2010 onward Alex travelled extensively, spending time in Cambodia, Northern Ireland, and Poland, before settling in Germany. While in Cambodia he played with several bands and developed a fascination with field recording – the unique soundscapes of local environments becoming an important element in his music moving forward.
Since 2015 Alex has released multiple albums and founded Supple 9 – a record label and studio for his own projects and occasional guest releases. He has played a number of music festivals alongside artists such as Rafael Anton Irisarri, Pieter Nooten, Christoph Berg, and Greg Haines. In 2019 he joined the US-based collective/label, Errorgrid, releasing material under the name Exan. In addition to his own productions, Alex works as a mastering engineer through Supple 9, where his clients include artists such as Oberman Knocks, Eomac, and Peter Zinovieff. Since 2023, Alex has been involved with the sonic-art scene in Berlin, arranging the first audio works for the Art Spring festival, and creating audio-visual installations with Mike IV. He also designed a sound installation for the Bosch & Beyond multimedia exhibition at Kühlhaus, as well as working with BYOB Berlin on various multimedia exhibitions. At the end of 2024 he and Erik Levander launched Pattern Zero, a new label focused on solo and collaborative projects in the dub-techno/techno realm.
Across his career, Alex’s work has found a beautiful balance between ethereal electronics, and grounded, natural sounds – a multidisciplinary approach that spans music, film, visual art and immersive live performances, and a balance of self‑realised projects with selective collaborations.
